Under the umbrella of the Inter-Regional Cooperation on the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda, the voluntary local review of the city of Agadir in Morocco is the first voluntary local review to be conducted in the country and in North Africa. This important accomplishment towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is the result of collaboration between the Municipality of Agadir, ESCWA, the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) and the United Cities and Local Governments Middle East and West Asia Section (UCLG-MEWA).

The voluntary local review of the city of Agadir rests on evidence-based, participatory, reflective and actionable principles. It focuses on a review of the city’s progress towards SDG 5, SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 11, SDG 13 and SDG 17. These Goals and their respective targets were selected by the municipality, upon consultation with United Nations agencies based on their relevance to the competencies and strategic objective of the municipality, as well as data access and availability.
