Within the framework of technical cooperation with the Ministry of Transport in Iraq, ESCWA is organizing an introductory workshop, in cooperation with the Planning and Follow-up Department of the ministry, to support the establishment of a national centre for sustainable transport.
The workshop is aimed at discussing the relationship between transport and the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the initiatives of ESCWA and the rest of the United Nations organizations in the field of sustainable transport. It also includes a presentation of the Iraqi centre’s tasks and activities following a review of the experiences of developed countries in establishing national centres for sustainable transport studies and research. The workshop tackles various administrative and organizational options for the centre in line with the directions of the Ministry of Transport and the Iraqi Government.
Participants include more than 40 high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Transport and its affiliated institutions, and from other ministries, governmental organizations, academia and non-governmental organizations concerned with sustainable transport.
