On 18 May, ESCWA held a regional workshop on road safety in Arab countries virtually, as part of the activities of the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week marked between 17 and 23 May on the theme "Streets for Life - Reducing the Speed to 30 km/h".
ESCWA presented the latest developments in road safety management in the region. Participants then discussed their countries' experiences in improving road safety, including reducing the speed to 30 Km/h in some urban areas where traffic of pedestrians, bicycles and cars is intertwined, drawing lessons learned and good practices.
In 2005, the UN General Assembly officially expressed its support for the organization of a Global Road Safety Week, which serves as a platform for global, regional, national and local activities to increase awareness on road safety issues.
