Iraq’s transportation sector faces significant challenges, including traffic congestion, traffic shocks, inadequate infrastructure, and high dependence on fossil fuels. To overcome these challenges, ESCWA organized on 30 and 31 January an introductory workshop, in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport in Iraq, to support the establishment of a national centre for sustainable transport.

It also included a review of the experiences of developed countries in establishing national centres for sustainable transport studies and research.
