With Arab countries moving towards ageing societies, there is an increasing need to understand the broader framework of older persons’ rights and to establish specific legislations to protect them. In response, ESCWA organized on 13 November a virtual dialogue with members of parliaments from the region to discuss the protection of older persons from violence, abuse, and neglect.
Participants discussed recent developments in national legislative frameworks addressing abuse and violence against older persons, and examined challenges and gaps related to detecting, reporting and criminalizing such abuses, as well as ensuring older persons’ access to legal protection.
They also exchanged experiences and best practices on the participation of parliamentarians in national efforts to advance issues related to older persons and protect them from abuse, violence and neglect, through their legislative, oversight and representative roles.
