The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is working on a “Regional Initiative for Promoting Small-Scale Renewable Energy Applications in Rural Areas of the Arab Region (REGEND)”, which is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). REGEND aims to improve the livelihood, economic benefits, social inclusion and gender equality of Arab rural communities particularly marginalized groups, by addressing energy access, water scarcity and vulnerability, climate change and other natural resources challenges in three targeted countries, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia.
In this context, ESCWA, in partnership with the Municipality of Akkar Al-Atika, is organizing a capacity-Building Workshop on “The Use of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Technologies and Applications for Rural Development in Lebanon”.
The workshop will cover the theoretical, the technical, and the practical dimensions of renewable energy and energy efficiency and will also include a hands-on site visit to the newly-commissioned solar water heating system on the roof of the women-led cooperative building in Akkar Al-Atika where the training will take place. The workshop will also cover the solar photovoltaic system that will be installed for the same building in the coming weeks.
This training workshop will cover the following topics:
- Overview, current status, and outlook of the electricity sector in rural areas in Lebanon.
- Energy efficiency measures in buildings.
- An overview of renewable energy resources, technologies, applications and relevant national and international case studies.
- The potential of renewable energy in rural areas for rural development, entrepreneurship, women and youth empowerment, and productive activities.
- The legal framework for small-scale renewable energy in Lebanon.
- Access to finance small-scale renewable energy projects.
