Local action is key for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advancing an inclusive and resilient COVID-19 recovery. The project “Fostering COVID-19 recovery and SDG implementation through local action in Asia-Pacific, Arab and African countries” recognizes the importance of reinforcing the capacities of local and regional governments and multi-level governance systems to advance the localization of SDGs.

Led by UN-Habitat and ESCWA, the implementation of the project in the Arab region kicks off with an inception meeting, attended by the project’s implementing partners and representatives of pilot cities.

Outcome document

The localization of the SDGs has never been so central as today. Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) and the New Urban Agenda (NUA) are transformative tools for sustainable urbanization as they support local government's role in achieving the SDGs while putting the people at the center of development strategies.

The project’s ultimate objective is to harness the increasing efforts of the pilot cities and local governments in the Arab region committing to localizing the SDGs.

Through the implementation of this project, UNESCWA and UN-Habitat will advance cooperation and engagement in the region in order to make the voices of Arab cities heard.
