Study on National Accounts in the ESCWA Region: Sources and Methods
January 2009
Concerned about the level of implementation of the 1993 System of National Accounts (1993 SNA) in the Western Asia region, and in view of the new challenges represented by the recent adoption of the 2008 System of National Accounts (2008 SNA), ESCWA conducted a survey in 2009 to explore the main obstacles hindering the full implementation by its member countries of the 1993 SNA fifteen years after its adoption. This booklet provides a synthesis of the replies to the questionnaire designed and circulated by ESCWA to its fourteen member countries about the sources of their national accounts data, the compilation practices and the methods and degree of implementation of the 1993 SNA. It contains a review and comparison of the different approaches and methods adopted in compiling national accounts statistics in the region. Providing an analysis of the main results of the survey, the booklet gives a broad perspective on the status of compilation of national accounts. It concludes with an outline of a governance and coordination structure of the SNA implementation plan in the ESCWA region.
