The metaverse is no longer fictional; it is a ground for innovation, collaboration and action. Unleashing its full potential is crucial to addressing pressing global challenges and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The ITU, ESCWA and other UN agencies held the UN Virtual Worlds Day under the theme “Harnessing the metaverse to advance the SDGs” in Geneva, Switzerland, on 14 June. Participants discussed how to regulate and safeguard the virtual worlds and the metaverse and showcased the latest technological advances.
In addition, ESCWA presented 19 public policy recommendations to help Governments navigate the metaverse landscape and craft the necessary public policies in this complex and fast-changing context.
