UN-ESCWA participated in the sixth meeting of the United Nations Collaboration on Road Safety and the second meeting of the Global Steering Committee for the First UN Global Road Safety Week that took place in Muscat from 25 to 28 February 2007. Mr. Bassam Anani, Officer in the UN-ESCWA Transport Team, presented a summary of the most important national and regional activities that will be held during this Week. Participants met with Oman’s Minister for Foreign Relations Yousef Bin Aalwi bin Abdullah, who stressed the need to get more attention from the Security Council on the issue of road safety and to explore the possibility of convening a ministerial conference on this issue.

UN-ESCWA along with the other UN regional commissions will be participating in the global celebrations in Geneva, particularly the second meeting of stakeholders concerned with traffic safety, where a general review will be presented on the current situation of traffic safety and the solutions that were suggested for increasing its level. The meeting will also discuss the formulation of a new draft resolution on road safety to be presented to the General Assembly at a later stage.
