On 29 September, ESCWA held a preparatory meeting for a regional workshop on road and railway transport statistics in the Arab region, to be held in December. Officials from national statistical offices and ministries of transport, interior, public works and planning agreed on the methodology and contents of a regional guidebook under preparation, whose aim is to improve and harmonize the collection and dissemination of transport statistics in the region.
The guidebook, which will present best regional practices in transport data collection, will also tackle challenges such as data coverage; collection in times of crises and conflict; estimation methodologies; new data sources; and harmonization of definitions across countries.
Participants also agreed that national papers addressing those same challenges will be presented to the December meeting and used to facilitate the exchange of experiences and the collection of trends and lessons learned.
