In preparation for the 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) which will take place next year in Qatar, ESCWA held a meeting on 25 May on the margins of PrepCom1 to present Arab LDC priorities and discuss the possibility of establishing a close follow-up mechanism to improve aid efficiency.
Representatives of Arab LDCs and their development partners discussed impediments to development in the last decade, providing their own perspectives on scenarios for bridging financial gaps and mobilizing resources for development projects, not just relief.
ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti stressed the need for multilateral efforts to support local productive capacities; promote income-generating activities, especially for young people; and lay the foundations for strengthening resilience to conflicts.
