On 12 May, ESCWA co-organized an online workshop to discuss the repercussions of COVID-19 on the performance of the Pan-Arab Free Trade Area and intra-Arab trade, and derive recommendations to help Arab countries in dealing with those repercussions.
Participants highlighted the importance of providing a platform for Arab policymakers to meet with experts from international organizations concerned with economic and trade issues, and to exchange experiences in countering the negative effects of the pandemic. They also expressed the need for a deeper understanding of how to trade in goods and services is impacted at both the intra-Arab and international levels.
The workshop was organized in cooperation with LAS, AMF, UNDP and UNCTAD.
