ESCWA recently contributed to the tenth issue of the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) Dimensions magazine, tackling the effect of COVID-19 on multidimensional poverty (MPI).
ESCWA underlined that one of the greatest challenges of estimating the impact of COVID-19 on poverty in the Arab region was the lack of microdata.
To remedy this problem, an ESCWA team is currently developing a model that uses household data from the latest health surveys (2016-2018), and simulates shocks under each dimension of the multidimensional poverty index (education, health, housing conditions and access to services and assets) to obtain estimates for missing data. This effort will contribute to the understanding of the cumulative cross-dimensional impact of the pandemic over the next 18–24 months.
