Most of Egypt’s population, specifically irregular and informal workers, still lack protection against life cycle risks and access to basic income security. Therefore, extending the reach of social security schemes to these groups is of high priority for the Government.
On 21 and 22 May, ESCWA, the Ford Foundation and the Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity organized a workshop on “extending social insurance to irregular workers in Egypt”.
Participants learned from the experiences of government officials and practitioners from selected South American and North African institutions on developing and registering informal workers in social insurance.
