ESCWA participated in a UN Day organized by the UN Information Center (UNIC Beirut) and the Lebanese American University (LAU) at the latter's Beirut campus 27 April in which 17 UN agencies and programs participated. A ceremony launching the event was attended by ambassadors, diplomats, media representatives, UN officials as well as faculty members, students and alumni of LAU.
At its booth, ESCWA showcased several of its studies, publications, reports and other outputs while a number of its staff, led by Chief of Conference services Ahed Sboul, interacted with students to explain and share information about the work and mandate of regional commission. They also encouraged students and other visitors to regularly visit ESCWA's website to tap into a wide range of information and news about its activities, events, publications and statements and where they can check job vacancies in the organization.
The event included a ceremony during which statements were delivered by UNIC Beirut Director Bahaa Elkoussy and LAU President Joseph Jabra. A documentary was shown on the work of the UN, which is produced by its Department of Public Information, and a presentation was given by one of LAU's students on his university's UN-related activities.
In a keynote statement, Elkoussy said young people constitute 60 percent of the population in the Middle East and North Africa. “They are fundamental pillars for development. They represent a great potential for the present and the future of our societies. This is why the UN strongly believes in the importance of developing national youth policies that respond to their needs, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged,” ElKoussy remarked. He added that the UN highly appreciates young people’s opinions, initiatives and significant contributions to achieving and enhancing peace and development. “The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2010-2011 the International Year of Youth, which reflects the importance the world community places on integrating youth-related issues into regional and global development agendas,” he said.
Jabra, for his part, said LAU embraces youth because they are the only hope for a brighter future for humanity. He welcomed the close cooperation between UNIC and LAU and commended the organization of this first “UN Day” at LAU. Jabra called on youth to take advantage of this event, interact with UN agencies and learn about their various programs for economic, social and cultural development and those relating to health, education children, women welfare and other fields.
ESCWA was one of 17 UN agencies based in Lebanon that participated in that UN Day held under the slogan “UN 4 U”. The event aimed at raising awareness among students about the role of the UN in general and its Lebanon activities in particular. UN agencies displayed their latest publications and reports, screened documentaries and interacted with students to brief them on the mandates, projects and achievements of their organizations.
