On 27 September, ESCWA took part in the annual celebration of the Arab Day of Agriculture, organized by the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD).
ESCWA emphasized the need to develop rural areas and the agricultural sector to secure food and confront the threats emanating from the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the Arab region, even before the pandemic, there were two concurrent food-related challenges: undernourishment and obesity, which affected 50 million and 115 million people respectively. COVID-19 worsened food insecurity and poverty, rendering 2 million more food insecure and pushing 14 million more into poverty.
