ESCWA, in collaboration with the four other UN Regional Commissions, organized a panel discussion on “Bolstering the roles of urban professionals, local and national authorities in localizing and implementing the New Urban Agenda (NUA)”. The panel, held at the UN headquarters in New York, was part of the High level Meeting of the General Assembly to assess the implementation of the NUA.
ESCWA noted the importance of uniting the efforts of local governments to achieve the NUA, and briefed participants on its mission to build smart, sustainable, inclusive and resilient cities in the Arab region. It also affirmed its commitment to increase urban development through various means, namely the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development.
The regional commission also highlighted its role in enhancing dialogue on development among various stakeholders, paving the way for the implementation of the SDGs at a local level and presenting Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs).
