ESCWA Centre for Women organized an expert group meeting on 28 and 29 November 2018, at the UN House in Beirut, to present the first draft of the study titled “Women in the Judiciary: Removing Barriers, Increasing Numbers”, developed in partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International Commission for Jurists (ICJ), and aiming to inform and support efforts by Arab states toward more representative judicial institutions and to build a regional information base on women’s presence in the judiciary.
The meeting brought together a group of regional and international experts who discussed the draft study’s main findings, as well as the trends and best practices in the region regarding women in the judiciary. They also provided comments, critiques, and recommendations that will be used to augment the draft study.
