On 24 and 25 October 2018, the ESCWA Centre for Women (ECW) brought together at the UN House in Beirut, a group of experts to discuss and validate the first draft of a publication titled “Technology as a Renewed Hope to Gender Equality in the Arab Region: A Fact or an Illusion?”.

Geared towards promoting the realization of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), advancing the gender equality principle promoted in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and ensuring the attainment of the central principle of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of “leaving no one behind”, the publication is expected to conceptualize how technology, in particular Information and Communications Technology (ICT), could be challenged to boost the realization of all targets of SDG 5 on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. It will build on good practices tackling the different targets of SDG 5 and draw on international experiences to analyze their potential customization to the regional context taking into consideration the existing regional challenges. The publication will conclude with a set of policy recommendations for government and non-government stakeholders on how to harness technology to redress gender inequalities in the region.

The two-day EGM, organized around seven main sessions following the structure of the publication, brought forward sound policy recommendations that will help improve and finalize the first draft of the publication.
