Public social expenditure fuels progress on education, poverty and inequality and is directly linked to realizing the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The “Social Expenditure Monitor (SEM) for Arab States: Toward making public budgets more equitable, efficient and effective to achieve the SDGs", report, jointly produced by ESCWA, the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Children's Fund, offers a pioneering assessment of social policy spending in the Arab region, with detailed analysis and recommendations on how it can help accelerate progress towards the SDGs.
The objectives of the launch event are:
- Disseminating the key findings of the report
- Highlighting the challenges of adequacy, equity and efficiency of social expenditure and overall public finance management
- Discussing policy recommendations towards enhancing social spending, fostering the SDGs, and inclusive and sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic
