ESCWA will celebrate International Women’s Day 2022 under the theme of “Women on the Front Lines in the Arab Region”. We are highlighting women who have been at the frontlines of the pandemic, in different capacities, and have contributed to responding to and mitigating the impact of the crisis. This includes women in education, health care, policymaking, entrepreneurship and civil society.
The virtual event will begin with brief introductory remarks from ESCWA Executive Secretary, Rola Dashti. There will also be a special performance by the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music from the State of Palestine.
Cluster Leader Mehrinaz El Awady will moderate an experts panel comprised of women working in various sectors across the region discussing their experiences of living and working through the pandemic. The panelists include:
- Nicole Abu-Haydar – Unite Lebanon Youth Project – Lebanon
- Malaka Shwaikh – Freelancers in Gaza – State of Palestine
- Inam Asha – President of Sisterhood Is Global Institute – Jordan
- Nazek el Khatib – Ministry of Justice - Lebanon
- Sulaima El-Khalifa – Ministry of Social Development – Sudan
The event will end with closing remarks by Najat Alabdallah, representative of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, State of Qatar.
