In the framework of inter-regional cooperation on the implementation of the New Urban AgendaESCWA and UN-Habitat are organizing a workshop to outline the implementation plan of the project on "Fostering COVID-19 recovery and SDG implementation through local action in Asia-Pacific, Arab and African countries", which focuses on supporting localization efforts in nine cities across three regions.

The workshop specifically addresses the project's plan for Ramallah (State of Palestine) and Irbid (Jordan) in the Arab region. ESCWA and UN-Habitat are introducing tools and methodologies, including the Urban Monitoring Framework (UMF) and Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs), to guide project implementation. The event is aimed at training partners, discussing implementation methods, and establishing timelines to meet project objectives.

Outcome document

The workshop underscored the critical importance of ensuring a strategic alignment between the Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR) methodology and regional contexts. The focus was on fostering adaptability to diverse local environments for an effective and nuanced implementation.

A key takeaway from the workshop highlighted the need for incorporating country-specific considerations into the project implementation. The discussions revolved around understanding and integrating the unique contexts and objectives of cities like Ramallah and Irbid, emphasizing tailored strategies for successful VLR development.

The workshop placed a premium on municipal engagement, providing a platform to discuss and understand the main objectives of VLR development in each city. The emphasis was on how the VLR process directly supports and enhances local plans for sustainable urban development, ensuring a hands-on approach aligned with the specific needs of each participating city.
