ESCWA is organizing two side events on Arab Least Developed Countries (LDCs) during the fifth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries:

Supporting resilient sustainable development in the LDCs:  Addressing the compounding challenges of conflict and climate risk

(Doha 5 March 2023, Room 106, 12.15–13.45)

This event informs policymakers, humanitarians and conflict prevention and peacebuilding practitioners of the need to better understand how climate change can exacerbate vulnerabilities and affect outbreaks and dynamics of conflict. Key areas of policy and programming pertaining to supporting resilient sustainable development in LDCs are being discussed. Register here.

Operationalizing the Triple Nexus Approach in conflict and fragile settings: Reinforcing national actors to advance collective outcomes that reduce risks and vulnerabilities

(Doha 7 March 2023, PSF Room 3, 17:15 – 18:45)

This event emphasizes the importance of a “collective outcomes” approach to reducing overall levels of humanitarian need by building resilience and extending development gains to those most vulnerable. The event focuses on operationalizing the triple nexus through a human security and risk informed approach in the Arab LDCs and explores new ways of working with Governments of member States within challenging contexts or recurring crisis situations. Register here.

Outcome document

Climate security:

The meeting increased the understanding of the impacts of climate change on conflict prevention, recovery, and sustaining peace in LDCs, and identified potential links between climate change and conflict risk. Participants discussed key areas of policy and programming for supporting resilient sustainable development in LDCs, particularly those affected by conflict and vulnerable to climate risks. Concrete steps to support risk-informed policy making and planning were explored. Additionally, UNDRR shared information on the Risk Information Exchange and their support to countries in building resilience and creating climate risk vulnerability profile.

Triple nexus:

The discussion focused on the importance of a collective outcomes approach to reduce overall levels of humanitarian need by building resilience and extending development gains to the most vulnerable in Arab LDCs. The event identified entry points to operationalize the triple nexus through a human security and risk-informed approach. It also explored new ways of working with member state governments within challenging contexts or recurring crisis situations. ESCWA and partners announced the launching of the initiative to develop country-specific pathways for operationalizing the triple nexus approach through a risk-informed human security approach.
