Regional guideline on statistics on the volume of road traffic (vehicle-km) with presentations of some national experiences in the ESCWA region

This regional guideline on statistics on the volume of road traffic (vehicles-km) has been developed as part of ESCWA's efforts to provide support to Arab countries in the development of social and economic statistics and enhancing the quality of statistical systems in accordance with the requirements of the Sustainable Development Goals. The guideline is in line with the recommendations of the meetings and workshops organized by ESCWA during the last two years, which highlighted the importance of statistics on the volume of road traffic for Arab countries.
The guideline provides a practical tool and reference to help countries develop statistics on the volume of road traffic by providing information on concepts and principles associated with methodologies and best practices adopted at the international level to collect road traffic data and develop relevant indicators. It also presents some national experiences from the region and challenges faced in estimating road traffic indicators. The guideline concludes with a number of recommendations and actions needed to build statistical capacities.
