On 24 October, ESCWA Executive Secretary Rola Dashti participated in the high-level segment on policy dialogues in water-scarce countries for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, convened during the 4th edition of the Cairo Water Week held under the theme “Water, Population & Global Changes: Challenges and Opportunities”.
Dashti reiterated that the Arab region is not on track to ensure water security for all, where over 49 million people lack access to drinking water and 74 million are deprived of sanitation services.
She called upon decision makers to act now and focus on transboundary water cooperation to prevent future conflicts and support 90% of the Arab population living in water-scarce countries, while urging to double the efforts and increase collaboration at the national and regional levels to achieve SDG6.
