Managing negotiations over shared waters in Syria

Most of the water resources in the Arab region are shared, but they are not effectively managed and are not regulated by comprehensive international agreements. The lack of negotiating capabilities of member States is considered one of the most serious challenges in reaching regional agreements and establishing joint projects.

On 9 and 10 January, ESCWA organized a workshop in Syria focused on managing negotiations over shared waters. The workshop aimed to enhance the ability of officials from the Syrian Ministry of Water Resources to apply key principles and dialogue mechanisms in resolving conflicts and fostering cooperation.

Participants learned about negotiating experiences in the region, international laws governing water sharing and management, and effective strategies to manage conflicts.
