Hosted by the government of the Kingdom of Morocco, ESCWA convened the 10th Session of its Committee on Social Development on 8-9 September in Rabat. Participants included representatives of Member States, in addition to representatives from regional and international organizations.
The Session tackled three thematic issues: the population dimension of sustainable development in the Arab region; the extension of social protection to vulnerable groups with focus on persons with disabilities and informal workers in the agricultural sector; and participation as a lever for social justice. Participants also examined the proposed programme of work of ESCWA in the field of social development for the biennium 2016-2017 and made recommendations on ways to streamline activities and maximize benefits.
The ESCWA Committee on Social Development was established pursuant to the ESCWA 17th Ministerial Session Resolution 198 (XVII) of 31 May 1994, with the aim of promoting regional cooperation through the effective participation of relevant parties in member countries in planning and implementing the ESCWA programme of work in the field of social development.
