Israel's occupation policies and practices in the West Bank entail violations of international humanitarian law and human rights laws. These policies and practices have eroded Palestinian productive capacity and turned the occupied Palestinian territory into a captive market and a reservoir of cheap labour for the Israeli economy. This has decimated the Palestinian economy and rendered it dependent on Israel and international aid.
ESCWA seeks to assist Palestinian and international development actors to counter the evisceration of the Palestinian economy by exploring policy options that are grounded in contextualized analysis and utilize a more rights-based approach. These topics will be discussed with prominent economists in this expert group meeting organized by ESCWA. The discussions will build on the findings of ESCWA research, especially the mapping of Israel’s practices and policies in the occupied Palestinian territory and their economic implications.
