ESCWA, in collaboration with American University of Beirut (AUB), will be organizing a session on “Appropriate Renewable Energy Technologies for Developing Arab Rural Areas”, on 26 November 2014 within context of activities under the second international conference “RE in Developing Countries – REDEC”, 26 – 27 November 2014, Order of Lebanese Engineers premises, Beirut, Lebanon (website: www.redeconf.org).
The session will announce the establishment of Renewable Energy (RE) training center, hosted by Advanced Research Enabling Communities (AREC) that is located in a rural area in Lebanon, and affiliated to AUB. It will highlight RE applications appropriate for rural areas in the Arab region (solar energy, biomass, wind energy, geothermal, etc.). ESCWA has equipped the RE center, which is, with some RE systems. On 27 June 2014, an official inauguration took place at the AUB’ Headquarter. This center is one of the activities of ESCWA Development Account (DA) project “Capacity Building on Climate Change Mitigation for Poverty Alleviation in Western Asia” and funded by UN. This DA project was implemented during the period from March 2014 and June 2014.
This session will shed light on the importance of deploying applications RE technologies suitable for the needs of rural areas as well as the positive interaction between local municipalities and civil society organizations in this regard. It will address issues of raising awareness of the importance of the role of RE in achieving sustainable rural development in ESCWA member countries, improvement of living conditions for poverty alleviation and the reduction of climate change impact. It will also, focus on the activities of the Commission in the field of sustainable energy, and the role that could be played by RE training center in capacity building related to the deployment of Re applications appropriate to rural areas.
It is worthy mentioning that the 2nd REDC conference aims at assisting in finding out innovative and adequate solutions for energy production and energy saving in the developing countries. REDC topics of interest include, but not limited to: (1) RE Resources: wind, solar, biomass, hydraulic, geothermal, waves, tidal, etc, (2) RE Conversion: Electrical power converters, fuel cells, photovoltaic panels, heating and cooling, (3) Energy Storage: Electrical storage, hydraulic storage, thermal storage (4) Energy Management, Saving and Efficiency: Optimal management process, control algorithms, smart grid connectivity and control, green and zero consumption buildings, standards, (5) Developing countries policies and laws related to renew-able energy penetration, (6) Capacity building for the needs of developing countries, appropriate technologies and mechanisms for energy services in rural areas and (7) Implementation of educational and research programs in the fields of renewable energy, regional and international supporting programs for the penetration of renewable energy in developing countries and Hardware and Software Design related to RE.
