The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) is organizing a Workshop on the "Design of National Strategies for the Development of Statistics: Mainstreaming Gender in Sectoral Statistics", which will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 24 to 26 March 2008.

Background
Gaps in the compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistics slow down capacity to formulate public policy that is consistent with the needs of individual countries. The countries face the challenge to undertake statistical activities at the national, regional and international levels to fill in the gaps in the statistical supply needed for policy formulation, monitoring progress and development, in addition to impact of policies. Hence, the development of a statistical strategy represents an essential step in establishing a coherent framework for statistical development at the country level.
In line with the Marrakech Action Plan for Statistics which call for all countries to have a National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS), and the guidelines set by PARIS 21, the Statistics Division of ESCWA, aim to target countries which have not yet completed the design of their NSDS and build their capacities in this area through convening a workshop on the Design of NSDS and Mainstreaming Gender in Sectoral Statistics in selected countries.
The workshop is part of an international effort undertaken to assist the Arab countries in meeting international goals and standards in the area of statistics. The workshop aims to assist Member countries in designing their national strategies by the end of 2008 as a main recommendation emanated from the Third Regional Forum on Statistical Capacity Building for the Arab Region, in Sanaa during April 2007.
As a result the NSOs will be able to support national, regional and international efforts aimed at analyzing current economic and social situations, formulating and charting strategies, as well as tracking and monitoring progress towards their development goals including the MDGs.
