Women Syrian refugees in Lebanon: social, legal, and developmental needs
August 2021
This paper is part of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission of West Asia’s efforts to empower women Syrian refugees in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. Through focus group discussions with 85 Lebanese women and 100 Syrian refugee women between the ages of 18 and 45, the most prominent needs of vulnerable Lebanese and Syrian women refugees in Lebanon were conveyed. The basic developmental needs of health, education, employment and protection from violence, were important common issues of both participating groups. These needs are exacerbated by the lack of legal status, especially for refugee women, which leads to increased vulnerability and exploitation. This reality has led to increased tension between refugees and host communities, threatening the social fabric.
