Achieving green technology in the Arab region
Amman, Jordan, 2-3 October 2018
What: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is holding the 6th ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC) Technical Committee Meeting focused on regional policies to achieve green technology and the establishment of the Arab Centre for Climate Change Policies.
Where: Kempinski Hotel (Abdul Hamid Shouman Street), Shmaysani, Amman, Jordan
Why: The ETC Technical Committee Meeting is an annual event to discuss the Centre’s future work plan and identify member countries’ priorities and challenges in meeting global goals related to science, technology and innovation.
This year, focus will especially be placed on the implementation of the Beirut Consensus, a resolution adopted by ESCWA during its 30th Ministerial Session, held last June under the theme “technology for sustainable development in the Arab region.”
One key outcome was the establishment of an Arab Centre for Climate Change Policies to increase climate action and alleviate environmental impacts on current and future generations. Experts are expected to discuss how the new Centre will help build the capacity of Arab States and their institutions to integrate climate-related issues into national and regional development policies and programmes.
Who: Participants will include representatives from ministries, academia, research institutions, NGOs and UN agencies, as well as industry experts.
About ETC:
The ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC) was established in 2010 as a subsidiary of the UN Regional Commission headquartered in Beirut, Lebanon. Based in Amman, Jordan, the ETC works in close coordination with the seven substantive divisions of ESCWA to address critical goals in the areas of science, technology and innovation. This is achieved by (1) promoting knowledge and expertise, (2) organizing roundtable dialogues to address regional challenges, (3) providing technical support to member States on national projects, and (4) mobilizing resources and developing partnerships.
About ESCWA:
One of five United Nations regional commissions, ESCWA provides a presence for the UN Economic and Social Council in the Arab region. Its mandate is to support inclusive and sustainable development in its 18 member States (Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen), advance regional integration and provide advocacy for the region’s needs and concerns on the global stage. Through research and analysis, ESCWA links knowledge on economic and social issues to policy. It brings together policymakers, researchers, experts and other stakeholders in intergovernmental and expert group meetings in the pursuit of constructive dialogue and concerted action.
