Training on calculation of External Trade Indices for Statisticians in ESCWA countries

The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is organizing a training session on external trade indices under the project “Strengthening the Development of International Merchandise Trade Statistics and the Compilation of E-Commerce in ESCWA member countries”. The training will be held at the UN House in Beirut, Lebanon during the period of 14th to 16th December 2009.

Background:

Based on the request of the participants of the workshop that was held in Cairo from 12th to 15 June 2008, ESCWA was requested to organize a training session on the methods of elaboration of external trade indices. Overall, ESCWA region still suffers a lack of competence in the area of generating external trade indices for goods. Therefore, the objective of the training is to provide professionals in the field of external trade with the necessary scientific and practical tools to generate indices.

Objectives:

The workshop aims at introducing the professionals in the field of external trade statistics to the necessary scientific and practical tools and methods that enable them to generate indices. Consequently, the training aims at elevating the level of competence in the field of preparation and dissemination of external trade indices.

Participants:

Representatives of the National Statistics Offices, Customs Administrations and Central Banks from ESCWA countries will attend the training. Other related institutions will also participate.

• Theoretical and basic concepts of indices
• Unit value
• Elementary trade indices
• Pros and Cons of indices
• Introduction to the different methodological steps for calculating external trade indices
• Calculating monthly unit values
• Calculating annual unit values
• Rebasing and the link period

Implementation of the method:

• Lectures
• Discussions & practical exercises on computers

Language:

English and Arabic will be used in the sessions and interpretation will be available.
