Around the World, societies are increasingly concerned with their quality of life, and a consensus is growing around the need to develop a more comprehensive view of progress - one that takes into account social, environmental and economic concerns, rather than focusing mainly on economic indicators like Gross Domestic Product, which while an important measure of economic activity, was not developed to be the sole measure of a nation's progress. In this connection, hosted by CAPMAS, the OECD in close collaboration with ESCWA organized a conference on "Measuring Progress of Arab Societies" in Cairo 0n 27 May 2009.  The Conference builds on the progress of the successful initiatives made in 2007 in preparation of first draft on measuring progress of Arab societies as in input to the Istanbul 2nd World Forum.

The Conference reviewed accomplishments made, objectives, and expected achievements, it also held discussions on Links between measuring progress and other initiatives in the region and a round table on "What does the Arab region see as progress? Towards a framework for the progress of the region"

The Conference concluded by revitalizing the Steering Committee functions and membership with a defined TOR, drew on main messages to be taken to Busan, in addition to proposing a short-term and medium-term road map of activities for the Region.
