The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in partnership with the League of Arab States (LAS) and the Regional Office for the Near East of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-RNE) organized a virtual workshop for the Arab region on Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture. The workshop deliberations focused on the importance of including agriculture in negotiations on climate change, introducing the Koronivia joint work on agriculture, and its roadmap, and a presentation on the EU Green Deal.

ESCWA provided scientific evidence of the impacts of climate change on Arab agriculture and main challenges facing it, and presented the latest scientific tools used to monitor Food Security and assess the impact of climate changes on the productivity of agricultural crops in the Arab region, in order to improve the region’s ability to formulate adequate policies. A review of regional perspectives followed from each of the Arab region, Asia and Africa, the Group of 77 and China on their experience with KJWA and lessons learnt for sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. Different experiences from Arab countries were shared and finally agreed that there is a need for a common and unified Arab position, as well as the need for taking measures to adapt this sector with climate change.
