An Inter-regional Seminar on the Economic Assessment of International Transport Linkages and on Transport Facilitation will take place at the Grand Tiba Rose Hotel, Air force Defense Club, Heliopolis, Cairo, 26-28 June 2007. This seminar is organized by the United Nations' Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in cooperation with the United Nations' Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) under the patronage of H.E. Eng. Mohammad Mansour, the Egyptian Minister of Transport. The opening session of the workshop will begin on 26 June 2007 at 9:30 sharp. The seminar is part of the United Nations Development Account project "Capacity-building through cooperation in developing inter-regional land and land-sea transport linkages". The Project is jointly implemented by the United Nations regional commissions with ESCWA being the overall coordinator of the project. Participating countries in the ESCWA region include Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The objective of the Project is to assist member countries of the UN regional commissions in developing interregional transport linkages and to facilitate interregional transport, trade and tourism. The Project has an infrastructure component through which an inter-regional transport network will be defined and agreed, and a transport facilitation component. The Meeting has two main objectives: (a) To strengthen national capacities in assessing the economic feasibility of alternative inter-regional transport linkages; and (b) To strengthen national capacities in introducing transport facilitation practices in general, and in simplifying border crossing procedures along the priority inter-regional transport linkages in particular. The Meeting will be attended primarily by the project focal points that were officially nominated by their respective countries in the ECA, ECE, ESCAP and ESCWA regions. Other national officials concerned with the development of transport infrastructure and facilitation at interregional border crossings from public and private sectors have been invited, together with a few selected regional and national consultants from the four regions and a few selected international and regional organizations and funding institutions.
