The United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women/Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), will hold a sub-regional capacity-building workshop on legislative frameworks to address violence against women. Participants in the workshop will include government officials, parliamentarians and representatives of non-governmental organizations from 6 countries in the region. Representatives of the United Nations Country Teams (UNCTs) will also be invited to attend. The event will take place from 13 to 15 April 2010 in Beirut, Lebanon.
The objective of the workshop is to enhance the capacity of relevant stakeholders, in particular government officials, members of Parliament and non-governmental organizations, to achieve comprehensive legislation on violence against women, including amendment or revision of existing legislation on violence against women, and its effective implementation. Towards this end, the workshop will assess progress made, identify existing obstacles and challenges, and exchange experiences and good practices on ways for overcoming these.
