Intergovernmental cooperation for water and food security
Climate change, land aridity, conflict, environmental and economic shocks are affecting water and food security in the Arab region. Addressing these challenges requires transboundary and cross-sectoral cooperation, which can be enhanced by mutual understanding and exchange for collaborative action. ESCWA and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are supporting the Joint Ministerial Council of the Arab Ministers of Water and Agriculture and its High-Level Joint Technical Committee to ensure follow-up on the agreed work programme and formulate proposals for next steps.
The following activities aim to ensure continued support for the intergovernmental, cross-sectoral regional mechanism by:
- Strengthening institutional capacity for integrated policy design.
- Preparing technical policy briefs.
- Convening joint intergovernmental meetings on water and agriculture.
