Background
The overall objective of the initiative is to strengthen the statistical capacity of ESCWA member States in monitoring and reporting on the environmental dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals and targets.
The initiative builds on the work of the following three United Nations development accounts projects: the Programme on Statistics and Data: pillar on environment statistics (2017-2021); the Environment Statistics, Indicators and Accounts Project (2017-2010); and a regional project for strengthening statistical capacity for ESCWA member States in energy statistics and energy balance (2011-2014).

Our activities
ESCWA is building the statistical capacity of national statistical offices in ESCWA& member States by providing training, methodological documents and technical assistance on the following: using alternative sources to produce data on status land use and disasters; using satellite imagery and geospatial information for data collection and analysis; strengthening indicators on consumption and production; and monitoring resource efficiency and sustainability using the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting and the Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics for data compilation and analysis.
