Umbrella term for all persons who have a non-normative gender or sexuality. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer and/or questioning. Sometimes a + at the end is added to be more inclusive. A UNICEF position paper, “Eliminating Discrimination Against Children and Parents Based on Sexual Orientation and/or Sexual Identity (November 2014),” states all children, irrespective of their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity, have the right to a safe and healthy childhood that is free from discrimination.
