SDG interlinkages as an input-output system
May 2021
This technical paper presents the novel approach to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) interlinkages matrix, that allows for using it in applications that it was not used before, e.g. optimizing SDG expenditures, assessment how improvement in one SDG will affect the indicators assigned to other SDG or indication on how improvement in GDP, unemployment or other macroeconomic variables will affect reaching SDG. We found that SDG interlinkages matrix is very useful tool in optimizing the SDG expenditures, assessing how improvement in one SDG will affect other SDG indices and how macroeconomic variables shape reaching other SDGs.
Consequently, SDG interlinkages approach is underutilized in the policy debate. In addition, developments of overarching indicators, such as GDP per capita, unemployment and population shape the projections of many SDGs targets and general economic development is crucial for the fast achievement of the desired values of SDGs indicators. Also, achievement of many SDGs would be difficult and there are very few policy areas in which there are single interventions or policy prescriptions that would allow for quick achievement of given target. This paper also lays the theoretical foundations for future work on the SDG expenditures optimization and SDG impact assessment for Arab countries.
