Multidimensional poverty in Lebanon: A proposed measurement framework, and an assessment of the socioeconomic crisis

December 2021

The multiple overlapping crises witnessed in Lebanon have had severe repercussions for the poor and the vulnerable over the past two years. Even before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lebanese households experienced substantial deprivations in health, education, employment and income, general services and other living conditions.

In 2019, according to the estimates set out in this study, as many as 42 per cent of households were classified as multidimensionally poor. Since 2019, poverty has dramatically increased owing to a decline in economic activity and widespread political instability. ESCWA projects that multidimensional poverty doubled to 82 per cent of the population in 2021.
