Case study on policy reforms to promote renewable energy in the United Arab Emirates

January 2017

UAE is one of the major oil and gas producers; nevertheless, its journey to renewable energy started in 2006 in Abu Dhabi when the Government announced the creation of the Masdar Initiative in an effort to diversify its economy.

The present case study aims to provide decision-makers, project developers and other actors involved in the renewable energy sector with an analysis of the renewable energy policies and regulatory frameworks that are applied in the UAE to support the energy strategy, and deduce the lessons learned from that experience.
