Women's Legal and Political Gains: Reflections on the Moroccan Experience and Possibilities for Change in Lebanon

23-24 November 2017 – 09:00 am – AUB, Beirut

What: A conference on “Women’s Legal and Political Gains: Reflections on the Moroccan Experience and Possibilities for Change in Lebanon” organised by the Lebanese Association of Women Researchers (Bahithat), in cooperation with Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship and the Centre for Women at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA).

Why: For two decades now, Lebanon has been faced with the challenge of increasing women’s political participation in its interconnectedness with political reform, to empower women in society and secure their civil and political rights. Within that framework, Lebanon takes note of a unique experience in the Arab World where solid and concrete steps are being taken on the road to reforming and enhancing the role of women in Morocco- a country that has historical and cultural ties to Lebanon, and which faces several similar social and political challenges.

When: Thursday and Friday, 23-24 November 2017

Opening: At 09:00 am on Thursday 23 November 2017

Where: College Hall-American University of Beirut (AUB)

Who: Participants include women experts from Morocco, who have both academic and political experiences, and who have followed closely the reform efforts in their own country. As such, their participation will bring an added value, as they will be able to reflect critically on these reforms.

During the event, UN-ESCWA will be launching two recent studies on “Women’s Political Representation in the Arab Region” and on “Women, Peace and Security: The Role of Institutions in Times of Peace and War in the Arab Region.”
