UN-House in Beirut to Host a UN-ESCWA Regional Workshop on DevInfo

UN-ESCWA considers that there is an urgent need for member countries to enhance their capacities in compiling, disseminating and exchanging data and metadata. In this sense, the DevInfo statistical program provides the statistical community with a tool for effective working partnership among different data producers to facilitate exchanging a unified official statistics to relevant agencies and the regional commission in the region. It insures invaluable contribution by experts from national statistical systems by applying similar terminologies and be fully involved in the process of data collection and compilation. It is therefore organizing, in partnership with the United Nations Development Group Office (UNDGO), UN country Offices and the Statistical, and the Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRCIC), a regional workshop on “DevInfo v5.0” from 7 to 10 July 2008, at the UN House, Beirut, Lebanon. The workshop, which opens at 9:00 am on Monday 7 July 2008, will train participants from National Statistical Offices and Ministries of Health in member countries on the new features and tools of the “Users” and “Database Administration” interfaces. Participants will also share experiences gained and lessons learned in customizing and implementing DevInfo at the national level. “DevInfo” is a tool designed to support governments in monitoring the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and can be adapted to include additional user-defined indicators that are linked to key national monitoring frameworks. This software offers a cost-free and effective solution to address the needs of UN agencies and national partners to set up MDGs based information management system. This new version, which was released in May 2006, offers a range of new tools and features including a fully web-enabled version for effective dissemination and presentation of MDGs and human development indicators.
