Towards COP27: Arab Regional Forum on Climate Finance

What: Ahead of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 27), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is hosting the Arab Regional Forum on Climate Finance with the participation of ministers, officials, high-level representatives of the public and private sectors, and international development community leaders.

When: Thursday 15 September, at 9:00 a.m. Beirut time.

Where: UN House in Beirut, Lebanon, and online. Registration is required here for onsite and online participation by Monday 12 August 2022.

Who: The opening session will feature statements by:

  • Mr. Sameh Shoukry, COP27 President Designate and Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs (virtually)
  • Ms. Amina Mohamed, UN Deputy Secretary-General (virtually)
  • Mr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion and UN Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
  • Ms. Rola Dashti, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCWA.

The Forum: It  is one of the five regional forums organized by the Egyptian Presidency of COP27, the UN Climate Change High-level Champions, and the five United Nations Regional Commissions.

The Forum will explore the climate finance needs of Arab States to ensure water, energy and food security under changing climate conditions. Bankable projects that can accelerate climate action will also be showcased by member States, as well as innovative forms of finance and regional initiatives that can create opportunities for private sector investment, blended finance and bilateral support.
