Jordan Minister of Transport Opens
14th Session of ESCWA’s Committee on Transport

Jordanian Minister of Transport Lina Chbib will inaugurate the 14th Session of ESCWA’s Committee on Transport hosted in Amman on 9 and 10 October 2013, at the Kempinski Hotel. The current session of the Committee on Transport, which opens at 10:00 am tomorrow Wednesday 9 October 2013, will discuss progress made in the implementation of the components of the Integrated Transport System in the Arab Mashreq (ITSAM), including The Agreement on International Roads in the Arab Mashreq; The Agreement on International Railways in the Arab Mashreq; The Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Transport Cooperation in the Arab Mashreq; the national committees for the facilitation of transport and trade; road safety; ITSAM methodological framework; the related geographical information system; multimodal transport; and institutional frameworks and legislation. The fourteenth session of the Committee on Transport represents a continuation of the efforts of ESCWA in the field of transport, given the effective role of transport in achieving Arab regional integration. At this session, the Committee will review the progress made in that regard since its thirteenth session, which was held in Beirut last year. The Committee will dedicate one of its agenda items to a general discussion on major transport issues such as the harmonization of institutional frameworks and legislation in the transport sector in the region; and sustainable transport. In addition, the agenda of the current session includes a review of the progress made in implementing the recommendations of the Committee at its thirteenth session and of transport-related activities under the ESCWA programme of work for the biennium 2012-2013 in the field of transport. Participants in the Committee are specialists in the various fields related to the topics of discussion from ESCWA member countries. Also participating are representatives from a number of relevant regional and international organizations. ESCWA is one of the five UN regional commissions. It provides a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies for member countries; a platform for congress and coordination; a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA aims at supporting economic and social cooperation between the region’s countries and promoting development process in order to achieve regional integration. Libya, the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Tunisia became members of ESCWA in September 2012. By this new membership, the number of ESCWA countries rose to 17, including: Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, The Sudan, The Syrian Arab Republic, The United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
