Executive Secretary to Doha to Partake in the Annual Arab Banking Conference
United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of UN-ESCWA (the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia), Mr. Bader Omar Aldafa, heads to the Qatari capital, Doha, today, to partake in the Annual Arab Banking Conference for 2007, organized by the Union of Arab Banks (UAB), in cooperation with the Qatar Central Bank and the World Union of Arab Bankers, between 7 and 8 November 2007 in Sheraton Hotel, Doha, and held under the auspices of Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar. Aldafa is to give one of the key addresses opening the events of the second day.
Participants in the conference, which opens at 9:00 AM tomorrow, Wednesday 7 November 2007, and which is held under the slogan “An Arab Vision for the Economic Summit: Bankers, Investors and Finance Professionals Recommendations”, include the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Mr. Fouad Siniora, and the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Amr Moussa. In addition, ministers of finance, economy and trade in several Arab States, as well as chairmen and representatives of Arab banks, economic facilities, financial institutions and research centers.
The conference comes in preparation for the Arab Economic Summit, to be held in March 2008. It focuses on several axes, the most notable of which being: Arab regional integration, economic liberalization and giving the private sector its role, mechanisms for pushing forth common Arab economic work, developing investment to achieve sustainable development in the Arab world and the role of Islamic banking in financing sustainable development.
