ESCWA Wraps Up 16 Days of Activism Campaign in LAU Ceremony Thursday

Beirut, 04 December 2017 (Communication and Information Unit)—A ceremony will be held on 7 December 2017 at 16:00 at the Adnan Kassar School of Business (AKSB) at the Lebanese Amrican University (LAU) Beirut, Room BB903. This event crowns the United Nations-led 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign.

The ceremony will be an occasion to announce the winners of the regional art competition organised by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in cooperation with the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW) at LAU and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and launched in November. Candidates were asked to submit paintings, photos, poems, and music pieces, while answering the question: “Violence Against Women: Whose Problem Is It?”

The best submissions will be showcased at the event and winners will be featured in the Lebanese and Arab regional media.

In addition, the event will feature interventions by ESCWA and UNFPA representatives, as well as by Rand Abdul Nour (website), a Jordanian artist who has done powerful creative work to promote the repeal of Jordan’s Article 308, which until recently allowed a rapist to escape prosecution if they married their victim.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign (25 November – 10 December) serves as a time to raise awareness and increase momentum toward ending violence against women and girls worldwide.

The United Nations Secretary General, through the UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign, supports the 16 Days of Activism under the 2017 overarching theme, “Leave No One Behind: Ending Violence against Women and Girls.”

The ESCWA Communication and Information Unit (ECIU) kindly requests media representatives wishing to cover this meeting to confirm their attendance by 6 December 2017 to the following email address: david.krivanek@un.org or on the following numbers: +96170827372 | +96170008879 | +96170079021
